The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) was an SBA-backed loan that helps businesses keep their workforce employed during the COVID-19 crisis.

PPP has provided loans to small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Businesses with fewer than 500 employees, sole proprietorships, independent contractors, and self-employed individuals could qualify for these loans, according to Harvard Business School.

According to Adam Shake, CEO and President of Estes Park EDC, these loans were intended for employers, sole proprietors and self-employed people to help pay employee salaries. The loan documents went through the lending departments of the banking institutions according to guidelines and were thoroughly reviewed by the banks and the federal government.

Preliminary analysis by the National Bureau of Economic Research suggests that the areas most affected by the economic disruptions did not receive the most loans.

The Paycheck Protection Program ended May 31, 2021. Existing borrowers may be eligible for loan forgiveness at the discretion of the lender.

According to the US Small Business Administration, 34 Paycheck Protection Program loans were issued in April to small businesses in the 80517 ZIP code.
